Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the option to question specific calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
