The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
