Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then found numerous other smeared cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; authorities are not yet informed of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the public for tips.
A high-ranking official stated the incident made him speechless and required to be solved quickly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right attack in 2020," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
