Activist Group Asserts to Have Scraped Countless of Audio Tracks from the Streaming Giant

A digital rights organization has stated to have harvested millions of tracks from Spotify and is getting ready to publish them online.

Potential Impetus for AI Training

Industry experts said the apparent data breach could boost AI companies looking for material to develop their technology.

An entity called Anna’s Archive reported it had obtained 86 million music files from Spotify and 256 million entries of metadata such as performer and record names. Spotify, which carries more than 100 million songs, stated that the breach did not constitute its full inventory.

“We have identified and disabled the malicious user accounts that engaged in unlawful scraping,” said a Spotify representative.

The Stockholm-based service, which has more than 700 million users worldwide, added that an inquiry into unauthorized access found a third party scraped public metadata and used illicit tactics to bypass DRM [digital rights management].

Archive's Stated Goal and Worries

The streaming service does not think the music acquired by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is recognized for providing links to copyright-infringing books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

They asserted the music files accounted for 99.6% of all music streamed to by Spotify users and would be shared via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a means of sharing large digital files online.

“Naturally Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a great beginning,” commented Anna’s Archive, which frames its mission as “preserving humanity’s knowledge and culture”.

AI Training and Intellectual Property Debate

A composer and campaigner for protecting artists’ copyright, remarked the leaked music would probably be used for developing AI models.

“Educating models on illegally sourced material is sadly common in the AI industry, so this accessed music is almost certain to end up instructing AI models,” he stated.

The group's website makes references to a large online archive, a vast online archive of copyrighted books that has reportedly been leveraged by the parent company of Facebook to develop its AI models.

A founder of an artificial intelligence company posted on LinkedIn that members of the public could in theory “create their own personal free equivalent of the service”. The executive said it could also enable tech companies to “train on contemporary music at scale”.

Copyright has become a battleground between artists, writers and creatives on one side and tech giants on the other.

Policy Proposals and Responses

In the UK, artists and writers have raised concerns against a ministerial suggestion to let AI companies use protected work without permission unless the owner opts out. Virtually every participant to a government call for evidence on the idea has backed artists’ apprehensions.

The secretary of state for technology, research and technology informed parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the issue, noting that ministers would “take the time to get this correct”. The government has committed to make regulatory plans on AI and copyright by March 2025.
